Nesting Instinct #PhiladelphiaFlowerShow

Earth is the nest, the cradle,
and we’ll move out of it.
– Gene Roddenberry

If we don’t protect it with great haste, it will no longer be inhabitable!

In the center left you can see City Hall with William pinned statue on top. Dwarfed by the skyscrapers.

I’ve been in #Philadelphia building a human-sized nest for the Philadelphia Flower Show!  as part of an exhibit for FreshArtists, an amazing program which brings art processes and materials to young aspiring artists in the Philadelphia area and beyond.

Fresh Artists flew me in, to my great surprise, because they googled “big nests” and found a photo of me curled up in the nest I built with my #CastletonUniversity students a decade ago. I was quite surprised and feel very honored.

I only agreed to this exciting challenge because I have two dear artist friends: Nanci Hersh and Dora Ficher who live in or near Philly who agreed to help. I could not have done this without them.

After collecting branches, saplings, deadfall, vines, leaves, twigs, etc. in the sopping sodden rainy forest, we hauled them in to Philly and began to build.

It’s now finished!

It has been such a joy, honor, and privilege to be working along side you in this project. I continue to learn all about the natural world through your passion and knowledge. And what fun! Thank you
