I love to travel, especially when I can see new vistas and landscapes and LEARN new things! So my recent journey to Scottsdale, AZ, which took me through Winslow, AZ was perfect. I never tire of these vast southwestern horizons. The cloudscapes are always inspiring!
Winslow was full of fun surprises, including the statue of Don Henley standing on the corner. It was such a fine sight to see!

We stayed at the La Posada Hotel, a beautifully renovated Harvey House Hotel, right on the train tracks. The building was designed by Mary Colter and built in 1929. A tourist destination for decades, the hotel fell into sad disrepair and was abandoned from 1957- 1997 .

This proud hotel was about to be razed when artist Tina Mion and her husband Allan Affeldt came to the rescue! Thank goodness for that! They have restored it exquisitely, honoring the building’s traditions with elegance and pizzazz.
The walls of La Posada are filled with Tina’s deeply personal paintings. There are many large scale images. A series of portraits of the US presidents and their wives portrayed as playing cards is not on display, but some reproductions are available in the gift shop. This portrait of Jackie Kennedy is particularly poignant.

Tina is a masterful painter. I highly recommend staying at La Posada. The food is fabulous; atmosphere wonderful and Tina’s art fascinating.
I’ll definitely be back!

Slowing down to have a look…how fun! What a great adventure and loved seeing the big open sky and Tina’s paintings. Love reading your travel diaries- feel like I am there with you (in spirit at least!)

A spot I’d heard of (Winslow) but had no idea what was there. I love the hotel — don’t you love it when you hear about someone restoring a building but then making it their own? She should be proud of the building — and your terrific recommendation!
