Nightmare on Art Street

April 17th, 2010

I have had dreams, and I have had Nightmares.
I overcame the Nightmares
because of my dreams.

Dr. Jonas Salk

Do you have bad dreams?

Do night terrors awake you in the wee hours, in the darkness, rigid with tension and uncertain of what is real:  your dream, or the comfortable pillow under your head?

John Henry Fuseli painted about nightmares in the 17th century. The literal intepretation of the night mare horse peeking though the curtain at a demon is very endearing.

It doesn’t happen to me often anymore, but on those rare occasions that it does I usually realize that for some reason, I have been neglecting my muse.

Too much time has elapsed without a creative act. I can’t explain the psychology of it but I know that if I just go out and MAKE SOMETHING… bring beauty or mystery into my life, then the dark corners of my subconscious are illuminated and the nightmares go away.

I can’t help but wonder, am I the only artist this happens to?
