The artist’s life

Painting completed my life.
-Frida Kahlo

Just watched the movie Frida again last night. Salma Hayek exquisitely portrays the life of the passionate, tormented Mexican surrealist. It was fascinating. She was labeled a "surrealist" but her art is so deeply, intimately personal that genre title doesn't seem a good fit.
I have always been intrigued by her imagery: grotesque, complex, sensuous and disturbing. For her, the drive to make art was dominant before the tragic accident that subjected her to a life of pain. Then art became her greatest and most constant friend and companion.

What makes us artists?
