Respite in the mountains.

November 27th, 2008

Thanksgiving. Who would have thought it would be happening around now, in late November? The world keeps on turning outside of my studio no matter how busy I am or whether I notice it or not.

It's bad timing for a break, while I am in mid-stride with work, but so very good to be with family.  Fabulous company and location. I am staying in a perfect cabin nestled in the forest, 9000 feet in the Rockies. Yesterday we skated on new ice.

Black ice. It was a great glide over transparent glass: a thin layer between my warm blooded body and dark cold water beneath. A personal challenge… to swallow the fear and glide.
Not much time to visit galleries or art in Boulder. Unfortunately Boulder Public library had just taken down the show that Alyson Stanfield had recommended. Fortunately the clay sculpture by Caroline Douglas was still there. Wonderful salt fired textures and surfaces. Intriguing imagery. Inspiring to spend time with this body of work, particularly since I had just left sculpture drying and the kiln in process in Vermont. A visit with artist and friend Linda Lowry was also very satisfying. Her work is elegant, masterful and serene.

Time to go in to the big house and help prepare for the festivities

Fun to be with cousins and siblings and nephews and aunts and uncles and first-cousins-once-removed from Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Washington State and Vermont.  A wonderful time was had by all, thanks to the hard work of Jess and Trina, which they, of course made seem effortless! Truly gracious!
