Fran Bull Show @ Liza Myers Gallery

October 25th, 2008

I would rather live in a world where
my life is surrounded by mystery
than live in a world so small
that my mind could comprehend it.

Harry Emerson Fosdick

I recently spent an afternoon with Fran Bull in her studio in Brandon, Vermont. We sorted through a pile of intricate ink drawings for her upcoming show which opens on November 15.
What an intimate and energizing experience- to delve into her casually heaped pile of drawings, hearing her comments and responses. It is an impressive body of work which she'd tucked away in drawers, never before exhibited.
The drawings are personal, energetic and sometimes humorous: inky black figures and faces created with grace & fluidity. Fran choreographs ink and water, allowing it to flow, granulate and settle in response to her gestural lines and brushstrokes.
The resulting abstract quality challenges the viewer for personal interpretation: nothing is literal or absolute. Representational references ebb and flow within the opacity and transparency of the ink lines and washes. Mystery and questions abound. Energy radiates from each image.
The exhibit will be at our gallery, also in the artful little town of Brandon, opening November 15 from 5-7.
